What The? Part 1 of 4

Elspeth Tirel rode across Mirrodins's battle scarred Glimmervoid. Her Chrome Steed bore many scratches, dents, and knicks from their many phyrexian run-ins. She finally reached an Auriok encampment on the edge of the Razor Fields. Elspeth dismounted and went over to the nearest person and asked:
"Where is the Hero of Bladehold, Ria Ivor?"
"Standing behind you," came a voice from behind Elspeth.
Elspeth turned and came face-to-face with a woman with short white hair.
"I'm Ria Ivor."
"I'm Elspeth Tirel. Koth sent me to find you. He and Melira need your help at the Tangle."
After a few moments Elspeth and Ria were off riding toward the Tangle. Several hours past with no sign of the phyrexians. As they continued on, Ria spotted a dark shape.
"Elspeth, wait!," Ria called out.
"What is it? What's the matter?," asked Elspeth.
Ria dismounted her Chrome Steed and ran over to the dark shape. Elspeth followed her. As soon as she reached it, Ria picked up the blackened disk. Elspeth saw the disk Ria was holding and asked:
"What is it?"
"It's a Darksteel Relic," replied Ria.
Elspeth looked to the relic and asked:
"What does it do?"
"What doesn't it do," replied a beaming Ria.
Elspeth looked up to Ria, waited a second, then asked:
"You don't know, do you?"
Without missing a beat, Ria looked to Elspeth and said:
"I haven't got a clue."
